Research at the University of South Australia indicates that the Omega 3s found in oily fish combined with a very gentle exercise program may help you lose weight. 68 overweight or obese adults took part in a 12 week trial. These people were all at risk of coronary disease and they were divided into 4 groups. Group 1 took Omega 3 fish oil and exercised 3 times a week, running or walking for 45 minutes. Group 2 just took the Omega 3 fish oil. Group 3 took sunflower oil and exercised. Group 4 just took sunflower oil. The clear winners with an average loss of 4.5 lbs were the group who took fish oil and exercised. The group who took sunflower oil and exercised didn't lose any weight at all. The two groups who just took oils didn't lose any weight either. The scientists believe that fish oil increases the elasticity of blood vessels and improves the flow - so during exercise, more blood goes to the muscles and helps break down the fat. One of the scientists said that if you take Omega 3 every day and exercise, you will lose weight - these volunteers on the program were still eating exactly what they wanted and she was very surprised to see it was so effective. If you're on a weight loss program, then this could give you a little boost. It's very hard to lose weight - it creeps up on you and unfortunately doesn't creep away again. The average loss of 1.5 lbs per month works out at 18 lbs (1 stone 4lbs) over a year. All for taking a fish oil supplement and walking three times a week for 45 minutes it seems quite painless and getting fresh air 3 times a week will improve your general well being. If youve only got a few pounds to lose, then this would be an ideal way of doing it. If youre on blood thinning medication, then please check with your doctor before you take any fish oil supplements. |
