Doing MoreThings Together

Author: Cheng Cheng Tan

I am always on a lookout for things I can do together with my kids so that I can spend more time with them. Whenever possible, I will try to bring them with me if I am going out.

As I was planning a crash course for 'O' level Chemistry, I needed to do some marketing. I got someone to help already. However, I thought I could give out some flyers(pamphlets of information given out to people) to some shoppers as well.

I thought there was no harm trying with the kids. People are more receptive if 'cute' kids give out flyers compared to adults. (I'm quite sure about that) Then I needed to teach my kids that the flyer is about Chemistry. So I actually got them to pronounce it correctly.

As it turned out, my older boy, Zhi Yang, did a great job. He was so enthusiastic about it that even I was impressed.

Passers-by who took the flyers from him stopped to ask him questions and even chat with him. He was not shy at all about approaching strangers and giving them the flyers. I thought it was a good chance for him to build up his courage to talk to strangers too.

My younger son, Zhi Hong, was not so keen. He just wanted to have fun and is rather shy about giving out the flyers. He was more interested in going to Macdonalds to have his chicken nuggets.

Well, we had a fun and great time! I rewarded them by bringing them to Macdonalds after that. Zhi Yang was so keen that he said he wanted to go to Macs later. I was shocked as Macs is usually his favourite place.

Hence, think of ways that your kids can help you with your work. It will be more fun and they can have a new experience too. What else' It makes the job easier for you too. (Of course that is after you have trained them to do it well!!)

As adults, we feel rejected if passers-by are unwilling to take our flyers. In fact, I took a whole stack and only managed to give out some.

Children have less mental bariers compared to adults. They do not feel as disappointed if passers-by reject their flyers. They just go NEXT to finish ditributing the flyers. It seem like a game and is fun to them.

This is lesson one. I have to enjoy what I do and make it fun for myself. Then I remember someone said "Smart people make their work look like fun."

The kids are smarter. They only took a few flyers at a time. Everytime they finished with the small stack, they were so happy and started announcing their achievements. 'See, I finish already!'. Then the enthusiastically took the next small stack.

I learnt a great lesson number two. I usually set my goals too high and is unachieveable then I feel like a failure. I am setting myself up for failure. Why should I do that? I should learn from the kids. Set really small goals. Achieve them first, celebrate then go to the next small goal. After big successes are built on smalll successes.
